Andrews County Pro Rodeo: Where Texas Tradition Meets World-Class Competition

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association proudly presents the 2025 Andrews County Pro Rodeo - a celebration of western heritage under the vast Texas sky

When the summer heat begins to blanket the West Texas plains, the community of Andrews comes alive with anticipation. The Andrews County Pro Rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), returns to the Andrews County Expo Arena on June 20-21, 2025, bringing with it the thundering hooves, skilled competitors, and timeless traditions that have defined rodeo culture for generations.

A Texas-Sized Welcome

As the sun sets over Andrews County, the arena transforms into a showcase of western excellence. This PRCA-sanctioned event draws top competitors from across the country, all vying for their share of the $9,000 purse and valuable circuit points in the Texas Circuit. For two action-packed evenings, spectators will witness the perfect blend of athletic prowess, livestock performance, and western showmanship that makes rodeo one of America's most distinctive sporting traditions.

"The Andrews County Pro Rodeo represents everything we value in professional rodeo," notes a PRCA representative. "The community support, the quality of competition, and the celebration of western heritage make this event a standout on our Texas Circuit calendar."

Seven Events, Countless Thrills

Each evening of the Andrews County Pro Rodeo features the seven classic PRCA events that test the skill, courage, and determination of the competing cowboys and cowgirls:

Bareback Riding - Perhaps the most physically demanding event in rodeo, bareback riders grip a simple handhold while their broncs twist, turn, and kick in unpredictable patterns. Judges score both the rider's technique and the horse's performance in this ultimate test of upper body strength and balance.

Steer Wrestling - Known as the "bulldogging" event, steer wrestling showcases raw power and precise timing as competitors leap from horseback onto a running steer, using strength and leverage to bring the animal to the ground. When executed perfectly, this event combines speed and power in a breathtaking display of athleticism.

Team Roping - The only true team event in professional rodeo pairs a header and heeler working in perfect coordination to rope a steer's horns and hind legs. Success demands flawless communication between the ropers and their horses, with timing measured in fractions of seconds.

Saddle Bronc Riding - Often called rodeo's classic event, saddle bronc riding evolved directly from the task of breaking ranch horses. Riders must maintain perfect form while synchronizing their movements with the bucking horse beneath them, creating what many consider the most elegant event in rodeo.

Tie-Down Roping - A demonstration of practical ranching skills, tie-down roping requires competitors to rope a calf, dismount, and secure three of the animal's legs with a pigging string. This event highlights the working partnership between cowboy and horse.

Barrel Racing - The arena ignites with energy as cowgirls and their horses navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels at breakneck speeds. This event showcases the incredible athleticism and communication between rider and horse, where victory and defeat are separated by hundredths of a second.

Bull Riding - The grand finale each night brings the crowd to its feet as cowboys attempt to conquer 2,000 pounds of bucking, twisting bovine power. Riders must stay aboard for eight seconds using only a flat braided rope for support, making this the most dangerous and electrifying event in rodeo.

Beyond the Competition

The Andrews County Pro Rodeo delivers more than just world-class competition. Throughout the event, specialty acts will entertain the crowd between competitive events, providing moments of levity and showcasing additional western skills. Young aspiring cowboys and cowgirls can experience their own taste of rodeo glory in the popular Mutton Bustin' competition, where children hold on tight to running sheep in a miniature version of the grown-up riding events.

The arena concourse will feature vendors offering western wear, handcrafted jewelry, custom leather goods, and rodeo memorabilia. Food vendors will serve up Texas favorites from barbecue to funnel cakes, ensuring no one goes hungry during the festivities. For families with young children, the Family Fun Zone provides activities and entertainment designed for the youngest rodeo fans.

The Andrews County Expo Arena Experience

The Andrews County Expo Arena provides the perfect setting for this celebration of western sport and culture. The facility offers excellent sightlines from every seat, ensuring spectators won't miss a moment of the action. The covered arena protects fans from the elements while maintaining the open-air atmosphere that defines the authentic rodeo experience.

The venue features convenient amenities including clean restrooms, accessible seating areas, and well-maintained facilities. Ample parking surrounds the arena, making arrival and departure a smooth process for attendees.

Tips for First-Time Attendees

For those new to the rodeo experience, a few insider tips can enhance your enjoyment of the Andrews County Pro Rodeo:

Arrive Early - Coming to the arena at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start allows time to find parking, locate your seats, purchase refreshments, and browse vendor offerings before the action begins.

Dress Comfortably - West Texas evenings can remain warm in June. Lightweight clothing and a hat are recommended, though you might want to bring a light jacket for after sunset.

Bring Ear Protection - Especially for young children, the arena can get loud during exciting moments. Simple foam earplugs or noise-reducing headphones can make the experience more comfortable for sensitive ears.

Stay for the Entire Performance - While bull riding might be the most famous event, each rodeo discipline offers its own unique excitement and showcases different skills. Experiencing the full rodeo provides a deeper appreciation for the sport's diversity.

Learn the Basics - Understanding the scoring system and rules for each event enhances your appreciation of the competitors' skills. The rodeo announcer will provide helpful information throughout the performance.

A Community Tradition

The Andrews County Pro Rodeo represents more than just a sporting event—it's a celebration of community and heritage. Local businesses support the rodeo through sponsorships, recognizing its importance to the cultural and economic vitality of Andrews County. The event draws visitors from throughout the region, benefiting local hotels, restaurants, and shops.

"This rodeo connects us to our roots," explains a local official. "Many families in our community have ranching backgrounds, and the rodeo celebrates those traditions while introducing them to new generations."
